Department of Water and Power General Manager David Nahai is resigning. According to the mayor's office Nahai sent a letter announcing his resignation as head of the nation's largest utility.
Prior to being selected as DWP General Manager Nahai served as president of the Board of Water and Power Commissioners. The mayor released the following statement Friday: "I would like to thank David Nahai for his four years of service at the (LADWP), where he led the team responsible for increasing the city's renewable energy portfolio, reducing water consumption to record levels, and putting us on the path to be coal free by 2020." Nahai, the statement says, has plans to serve as a senior advisor to the Clinton Climate Initiative. Nahai's timing is fortuitous, as the DWP has drawn harsh criticism due to the increasing number of watermain breaks and raised water rates. UPDATE: The L.A. Times reports: Mayor Villaraigosa has asked the DWP's board of commissioners to temporarily appoint his top environmental advisor, David Freeman, as interim general manager of the utility.
